Course outline

The Bachelor of Music is intended for students wishing to pursue a professional career in music, and integrates the development of practical skills with theoretical and historical musical knowledge. Graduates of the program are equipped for professional careers in music and to undertake Honours research.

The Bachelor of Mathematics caters to high-achieving students seeking to develop a comprehensive specialised knowledge in a field of mathematics or a high level of sophistication in the applications of mathematics. Mathematics is one of the most enduring fields of study and has consistently been proven as essential in an expanding number of disciplines and professions. Modern computation, advances in scientific technology and the increasing production of data have all increased the scope for applications of mathematics well beyond the traditional areas of engineering and the physical sciences, to include fields such as finance, economics, information technology and molecular biology.

There is increasing recognition that graduates with high-level quantitative and analytic skills will play a key role at the forefront of new developments in these and other fields. For more information, visit https://study.uq.edu.au/study-options/programs/bachelors-music-mathematics-2548

Career opportunities

Bachelor of Music graduates may gain employment in areas such as performance, accompanying, composing, arranging, lecturing, music editing, arts or education administration, librarianship, research, music programming, media work (journalist, critic, author), music education (instrumental school or studio).
A dual degree in Music and Mathematics combines artistic expression with analytical reasoning and positions graduates for diverse career paths that may include innovative compositional practices, emerging fields such as algorithmic composition and audio engineering, as well as traditional performance. The dual will help students build versatile problem-solving skills for a changing musical landscape where technological fluency increasingly differentiates successful practitioners. Further study and career options include acoustics research, music technology development, and data-driven approaches to musical analysis that would remain inaccessible to those with singular disciplinary training.
